MEET

THE OWNERS

We are a retired couple from Lincolnshire, UK. After many holidays with our children in Devon and Cornwall, we fell in love with the dramatic scenery and delightful, varied beaches of North Devon. We can now enjoy this area with our grandchildren..!

The Haven @Watermouth is a privately owned lodge. (There are just 42 lodges in all)  We purchased the lodge in 2014, having fallen in love with this beautiful part of the North Devon coast. Since then, we have undertaken considerable renovations to modernise the lodge and create a ‘haven’ which we and our guests can escape to. We hope that you will enjoy it as much as we do!

John - September 2022 - Airbnb

Quiet location, enjoyed walk to Broadsands beach, be aware of many steep steps! Found a good fish and chip shop in Combe Martin "top chippy" cash only.

Karen - September 2022 - Airbnb

Had a lovely stay in this lodge. Very clean and comfortable, everything had been thought. It was home from home. The softplay and park wre great for the grandchildren. Didn't use the outdoor pool as attending a wedding but will definitely book again if we're in the area and it was great to be able to walk to the wedding in Watermouth Cove.

Dawn - September 2022 - Airbnb

Thanks for a great stay

Sahel - July 2022 - Airbnb

We had a great holiday at The Haven lodge. Really lovely lodge, very clean and comfortable, perfectly equipped for our family with two children age 4 and 6. Picturesque surroundings and great facilities on site. The kids had the best time, especially in the heated pool. Lots of great nearby attractions for them, particularly the Watermouth castle theme park which is a few minutes walk away!

Danielle - July 2022 - Airbnb

Absolutely exceptional standard of communication and stay! The photos don't do it justice and the facilities at the complex were amazing, clean and more than we expected! So much for the little ones to do and always entertained! Being right next the castle made it all the more exciting for them. Thank you so much to John and Shiona, we definitely plan to come back!

Maisie - June 2022 - Airbnb

we had a perfect family holiday with x2 small children.

Kate - June 2022 - Airbnb

A lovely lodge in a fantastic location, has everything you need for a family holiday. The site is small and quiet with good facilities and is close to many popular attractions, gorgeous beaches and the South West Coast path. Unfortunately both swimming pools were out of action during our stay, the indoor pool we were aware was closed before booking but it was a shame the outdoor pool was also closed for maintenance

Response from John & Shiona

Thank you for your lovely review of our lodge. We are so sorry that the outdoor pool was closed during your stay. We only learnt of this yesterday following the previous guest's review. We queried this with the site owners and received this response today... "Yes, the outdoor pool was closed for urgent repair. During half term some of the children picked the tiles off the floor in the pool leaving very sharp edges, we had to close it to avoid injury to swimmers. The pool has now been repaired and is open." We have asked the owners to notify us in the event of any facilities being withdrawn in future so we can inform our guests.

John - June 2022 - Airbnb

The lodge was perfect for our family and had everything we needed including a cot and high chair for the youngest child. It was clean and well-presented when we arrived. The resort facilities were good, apart from the swimming pool which was closed for repairs. The children enjoyed the play area and the soft play (which looked quite new), and the restaurant was a pleasant space for meals and coffees.

Robert - June 2022 - Airbnb

The chalet was really nice, well appointed and comfortable. It had everything we needed, the welcome pack was a very nice touch. Plenty of space for 4 adults and 2 small children, including for dinner time. The location is perfect, close the coast with beautiful views across the sea. It’s next to Watermouth cable which was a hit with the kids (and adults). The Park Life resort had good facilities for the kids and the staff were friendly. The on-site restaurant is ok, very convenient. We can highly recommend the chalet!

John - May 2022 - Airbnb

It was a great holiday, the lodge is really lovely and well equipped, the park is great, and the location is stunning. Really recommend and would definitely go back.

Amber - May 2022 - Airbnb

Lovely lodge in a fantastic location.

Jalpa - January 2022 - Airbnb

The most beautiful lodge in a beautiful location - highly recommended! I booked a week's stay at The Haven whilst I was in Ilfracombe for work. The lodge was conveniently located, and provided all of the necessary amenities you would need, plus more! The lodge provided a cosy and homely atmosphere, with a lovely jacuzzi bath to relax in the evenings, and even some board games and dvds for a rainy day. The accommodation was very clean and offered coastal views within a short walk away. Everything was perfect, I will certainly look to stay here again.

Pam - September 2021 - Airbnb

The location was excellent for some stunning coastal walks. John and Shiona's property is very well appointed and equipped for six guests. We had a very pleasant long weekend and would certainly book again.

Dudley -  September 2021 - Tripadvisor

We stayed for 4 nights everywhere was very clean & tidy, the lodge we stayed in number 26 also very clean & fitted out with everything you would need for your stay, all the staff were very helpful & very cheerful which makes a very pleasant stay, great location opposite Watermouth harbour, would recommend Watermouth Lodges for a very great stay.

Eleanor - September 2021 - Direct booking

The Haven exceeded our expectations, both the lodge and the site itself. The lodge is very spacious and comfortable and the whirlpool bath and walk in shower a bonus! Lots of towels and nice bedding. The aspect is very pleasant with a small private garden which is not overlooked. Everything you need in way of cooking, freezer, washing machine and a small dishwasher ( hurray!). The site itself is very pleasant and wooded with gorgeous views of the sea and Watermouth cove. On site are 2 pools, which the kids loved, a restaurant serving a small but tasty lunch and evening menu (amazing scampi!), crazy golf, table tennis, a sports court, a nice playground, indoor play area, launderette and a small shop selling milk and bread. All the site staff were very pleasant and sorted out a plumbing issue on site which affected one of the bathrooms very quickly.
The site is literally a few minutes walk from the charming family attraction, Watermouth Castle, where we spent our daughter’s birthday. There is a lovely cafe down in Watermouth cove for lunch and Sawmills pub is 10 minutes walk away. For more varied evening dining we went to Ilfracombe. The site is on a slope so anyone with mobility issues would need to explore this in more detail, however there was a ramp option to access the lodge*. We had one successful Asda grocery delivery whilst we were there, and another which couldn’t find it, so leave very detailed instructions for the driver as there is no mobile signal at the lodge itself, although there is if you walk towards reception.
Tips for other travellers:
Would highly recommend The Terrace restaurant in Ilfracombe, Broomhill estate Sculpture garden and restaurant for something completely different, Hele Bay corn mill for heavenly sandwiches and Watermouth Castle for a lovely day with kids in truly gorgeous surroundings.

Note from John & Shiona - Although there is a ramp access, this crosses a neighbouring property so is not always available to guests

Gary - August 2021 - Airbnb

A real home from home. A really well equipped cosy lodge. Amazing shower and the jacuzzi bath a real treat too. The wifi was great too when you can add your Netflix to the tv too for those rainy days/cosy evenings. The lodge is elevated (which is great) so there’s a few steps up when you first arrive with your bags. Our stay was awesome, despite the weather!!! the site bar, pools and food all great too.

Julie - July 2021 - Airbnb

Lovely lodge with private terrace and lawn. Everything you need is in the kitchen. The lodge is spacious with big bath and shower. Nice and quiet and great for families.

Byron - June 2021 - Airbnb

Fantastic plain to stay in a great location. Will definitely be going back.

Jo - June 2021 - Airbnb

We had the most wonderful week’s stay here and loved it so much we will definitely be rebooking for next year! The lodge was really well equipped with everything we needed. It also had some nice decorative touches! It was spacious and comfortable. The lodge was also spotlessly clean. We have a one year old and there was plenty to do in the local area. The on-site facilities were also great, we enjoyed lots of swimming and indoor and outdoor play areas. The food in the restaurant was also fantastic. The on-site staff were very helpful and friendly too. I don’t have a single negative to say, everything was absolutely perfect and we loved every minute!

Nic - May 2021 - Airbnb

Beautiful well maintained lodge! Perfect for a romantic getaway with my partner, has everything you need for cooking and dining and is in the most beautiful location! Watermouth really is stunning, views of the sea from the lodge itself, and harbour and costal views just a 30 second walk away. The on-site restaurant/bar does great foods for drink and staff are friendly and helpful. 100% recommend staying here

Karl - May 2021 - Airbnb

Perfect location, accommodation is ideal for a get away in North Devon.

Steve - April 2021 - Direct

We were delighted with our stay at your lodge. The accommodation was perfect for our young family and the lodge had everything we needed and was spotlessly clean.  The site was excellent too. I saw some feedback from last year that it was a bit rundown, but everything was perfectly fine for our stay. We were able to book the pool for ourselves and the food and drink from the bar were excellent.

Guy - November 2020 - Google

Superbly located in a secluded woodland rise overlooking Watermouth Castle, standing guard above the charming Watermouth Bay harbour. The spacious, roomy and extremely comfortable lodge is well appointed, tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. Everything needed for a week or longer stay was thoughtfully supplied right down to the lovely weather. The passing wildlife was always a delight to watch. A fantastic place to base your holiday or just chill in perfect luxury. Very highly recommended.

Fiona - October 2020 - Airbnb

Lovely comfy and spacious lodge in Lovely location. Great facilities on site.

Ian - October 2020 - Airbnb

We had a fantastic break at John & Shiona's Lodge at Watermouth. The lodge itself is spotlessly clean and very well equipped. With smart TV, jacuzzi bath beautiful ensuite and very well equipped kitchen. There isn't much more you could ask for. Also the fee wifi is a nice touch especially with the kids! The location is great with plenty of things to do with the kids despite the covid restrictions at the time. John and Shiona are very helpful and accommodating hosts. We would definitely stay again.

Robert - October 2020 - Airbnb

We stayed October 2020 and had a lovely time exploring the surrounding area. An extremely well presented lodge with home from home amenities. Extremely clean and well stocked with all the little extras eg loo roll, hand soap etc. Plenty of fluffy white towels and shower in en suite was really good. Hairdryers were great, definitely no need to take your own. Plenty of hanging space with loads of coat hangers. Lodge was well kept and homely. The site itself is looking a little run down/tired and could do with some TLC but this did not distract from our enjoyment of our holiday. We did not use the site’s facilities as the lodge provided all we needed for our stay. Would definitely recommend. Thank you

Response from John & Shiona

Thank you for your lovely comments about our lodge; we're so pleased you enjoyed your holiday. We felt we should explain that the site was taken over at the end of June this year and the new team, whilst enthusiastic, have had considerable difficulties opening in the face of a global pandemic with all of the safety issues which that entailed and with no handover from the previous owner. Added to this, the move to 'staycations' resulted in an exceptionally busy summer. We are confident that they have now turned the corner and have some exciting plans for the future. Thanks again. John & Shiona

Rachel - October 2020 - Airbnb

We have just returned from a weekend away at this lodge. Arrived and everything was very clean and tidy. It had everything we needed. Nice to chill out during our wet and windy weekend! Our little boy enjoyed the big bath tub! Both bathrooms were great and kitchen too, very modern. Would have been great if the swimming pool were Open but they weren’t due to COVID.. the restaurant, bar and soft play were open and my little boy loved the soft play. We visited nearby restaurant The Sawmill too which served a lovely roast. Also went into ilfracombe but didn’t think much of the town itself, very run down. Obviously bad weather so couldn’t enjoy the beaches! Also visited nearby Exmoor Zoo which was good and would recommend. Thanks for a great stay!

Danielle - September 2020

The Haven met up to its name. We loved staying here with our 3yo daughter. The accommodation was well stocked with everything you need for an extended holiday (we stayed for 10 days). The cabin is nicely located on the holiday park site so you feel like you are in your own little peaceful haven. Our daughter enjoyed the playground as much as the weather would allow us! There are some beautiful walks nearby in Watermouth-take a walk to the boat cafe (Storm in a Teacup) and enjoy a cream tea in the harbour, watching the tide roll in. A perfect retreat.

Izzy - September 2020 - Airbnb

Great place to stay loads to do nearby! Clean place and bathrooms are great !

Chris - September 2020 - Airbnb

A lovely cabin in a lovely location. Nearby to many attractions and the on site facilities are great.

Mark - September 2020 - Airbnb

The "Haven Lodge" is actually sign posted "Amber Loge" from the roadway parking bay, which makes it a bit confusing on arrival...Look for number 26, ignore the name. There are about a dozen steps up to the lodge, normally not an issue except my mother broke her foot just a few days before our holiday, just be aware if steps are an issue for you. The Lodge it self was fantastic and came with just about everything one could need for a week or more of a self catering holiday. Check in and check out times have been altered due to Covid 19 so it kind of feels as though you are losing a whole days holiday - not the owners fault. This also affected which facilities were available to use on site. The restaurant and it's food was fine, just not too much of a choice. If we needed another break down in Devon we certainly would return here.

Response from John & Shiona:
The confusion regarding the lodge number is unfortunate. We try to give every possible piece of information to ensure our guests can find the lodge easily. Along with full directions and a map of the site, this text is sent to guests about 4 weeks before arrival: "The postcode for The Haven @Watermouth is EX34 9SJ. what3words location is fussy.pushes.dragons You are staying in Lodge 26. On arrival at Watermouth Lodges, follow the road up hill, bearing left past the ‘recycling centre’. Just past lodges 23 and 24 (Follow the arrows on enclosed site plan) you will come to a designated parking space on your left for Lodge 26 only; adjacent to steps up to your accommodation." There are a number of Amberwood lodges on the site, this specifies a lodge style. We had not experienced this issue previously but given Mark's feedback, we are now messaging guests to remind them of the lodge number 1 day before they arrive and we will consider providing the full information a bit nearer their arrival date.

Simon - August 2020 - Airbnb

Highly recommended - The Haven is very well appointed, spotlessly clean and in a lovely location, perfect for exploring the North Devon coastline and surrounding area. We spent a week there, and would love to have stayed longer, maybe next time we will. The kitchen is very well provided for and spotlessly clean and we cooked several meals while staying in the house. The Freeview Play (Smart) TV was a nice touch and pleasant to relax in front of at the end of a busy day, and the WiFi was fast and reliable which always helps. Also very welcome was the walk-in shower with very good water pressure and the Jacuzzi bath. It all added up to a very relaxing and happy holiday.

Helen - August 2020 - Airbnb

John & Shiona’s lodge was perfect for our family holiday in Devon. It was really cosy & comfortable, nicely decorated and very clean! The kids also loved the jacuzzi corner bath and the addition of Netflix! I would highly recommend it and would love to stay again in the future!

Angela - August 2020 - Airbnb

Me and my 3 adult children stayed for a week in this beautiful cabin with a gorgeous little private garden. We had some good weather so evenings with the patio doors open on to the decking made it feel special. We had everything we needed for a weeks self catering holiday particularlythe well equipped kitchen. Milk, tea, coffee, and biscuits were laid out on our arrival. A very clean and fresh cabin with 2 bathrooms, the ensuite shower felt like a power shower which is what you need after hours exploring the beaches! Of course followed by comfy beds. We had picked a few beaches we wanted to visit and we felt the cabin was perfectly situated in between them all, particularly Broadsands which is amazing. There is a fantastic paddleboard/kayaking/coasteering training and hire company just a 10 minute walk away which provided us the best watersports days out we ever had as a family. Just a beautiful private cabin in an amazing location and we could not fault a thing. Thank you to John & Shiona for letting us stay.

Vicki - August 2020 - HomeAway (Please note, we have withdrawn our listing from HomeAway so this review may no longer be visible)

Property was excellent standard and meet the description perfectly. It had everything we needed and more. Would definitely recommend and revisit.

Chalet is clean, well presented, comfortable and perfectly positioned for exploring North Devon.

Matt - Nov 2019 - Airbnb
A beautiful, modern and spacious accommodation that was clean, comfortable and warm. It comes with broadband, a DVD player and Netflix for settling down in the evenings and is nice and close to Ilfracombe with stunning views of the sea and surrounding areas. I would highly recommend.
